Breaking: In Support of Governor Mbah’s Grassroots Inclusion Policy, Awgu Council Boss Brings Governance to the Doorstep of the People” Empowers Okada Riders

Awgu, Enugu State — Wednesday, August 13, 2025

In a moment that resonated deeply with the spirit of community service and inclusive governance, the Executive Chairman of Awgu Local Government Area, Hon. Uchenna Joseph Okolo, on Wednesday demonstrated a bold and compassionate commitment to grassroots empowerment by extending a practical hand of support to commercial motorcycle riders — the everyday heroes of local transportation.

In a colorful and impactful outreach held at Petrotec Petrol Station in Awgu, over 400 Okada riders from the six wards of Awgu South State Constituency — Awgu Ward I, Awgu Ward II, Mgbidi-Mmaku Ward, Anikenano-Ugwueme Ward, Obeagu Ward, and Mgbowo Ward — each received 5 liters of petrol, free of charge.

This timely intervention is in direct alignment with Governor Peter Mbah’s Grassroots Inclusion Policy — a policy that continues to gain traction across Enugu State for its emphasis on community-driven development and inclusive leadership.

Speaking during the event, Hon. Okolo described the empowerment initiative not merely as an act of charity, but as a “symbol of solidarity and shared governance”, highlighting the role of Okada riders as essential drivers of the local economy and heartbeat of rural mobility.

“This is our own way of saying thank you,” Hon. Okolo said with heartfelt sincerity.

“Our Okada riders are not just transporters — they are lifelines. They connect our people, sustain our villages, and fuel our grassroots economy. This administration, under the inspiration of His Excellency Governor Peter Mbah, remains unshaken in its commitment to being a government of the people, for the people, and with the people.”

Amid cheers, prayers, and visible gratitude, beneficiaries praised the gesture as timely and unprecedented. Community elders and youth leaders hailed the chairman for not only recognizing their struggles amid economic hardship but for responding with direct action.

The event also doubled as a town hall-style engagement, where riders voiced their concerns and hopes, reinforcing Hon. Okolo’s reputation as a listening leader and advocate of participatory democracy.

This initiative is one of many in the administration’s broader agenda to uplift the neglected, bridge governance gaps, and ensure that no ward, no village, and no individual is left behind.

With each liter of petrol pumped and each handshake extended, the message was clear: Awgu LGA is marching forward — powered by unity, compassion, and a shared vision for a brighter tomorrow.

Hon. Tochukwu Chukwu,

Special Adviser, General Media and Publicity

Office of the Executive Chairman, Awgu LGA

The African Democratic Congress, ADC, has described reports that more than 17 million Nigerians, including infants and young children, are facing acute hunger as a growing humanitarian disaster created by the President Bola Tinubu administration’s incompetence, misplaced priorities and failed policies. ADC’s spokesman, Bolaji Abdullahi said Nigerians are dying of starvation under his administration. He was reacting to a United Nations World Food Programme, WFP, report showing that more than 17 million Nigerians across nine conflict-affected northern states are facing acute hunger. A statement signed by Abdullahi, condemned the Tinubu-led APC Federal Government for what it described as its “cruel indifference” to the growing humanitarian crisis brought about principally by its failure to contain the banditry and terrorism that has displaced farming communities, as well as the harsh economic policies that have pushed food beyond the reach of millions of Nigerians. The full statement read: “The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has received with profound concern the latest assessment by the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP), which confirms that Nigeria is now facing one of its worst food security emergencies in almost a decade.” “According to the WFP, more than 17 million Nigerians across nine conflict-affected northern states are now facing Crisis, Emergency or Catastrophic levels of food insecurity.” “This represents an increase of almost two million people from previous projections. In Borno State alone, more than three million people are acutely food insecure, while the combined figure for Borno, Adamawa and Yobe has risen to 6.2 million people. “These are not opposition figures. They are not campaign slogans. They are the findings of the world’s leading humanitarian agency on hunger. “In other words, the hunger confronting millions of Nigerians today is not a natural disaster. It is an APC-inspired government-created humanitarian disaster. “This humanitarian crisis is also the predictable outcome of a government that has failed to secure Nigerian lives, failed to protect Nigerian farmers and failed to address the cost-of-living crisis that it has created. “For three years, the Tinubu government has repeatedly told Nigerians that the pain that we experiencing is temporary. The WFP has now confirmed what Nigerians have been saying all along: insecurity is spreading, agricultural production is declining, food inflation is worsening and millions of us, the Nigerian people, are being pushed deeper into hunger.”
