Auto crash: FG urged to subsidise flight fares for prospective corps members

Families of the prospective National Youths Service Corp members who lost their lives in a ghastly accident en route Katsina State for the mandatory one year programme have called on the Federal Government to subsidise flight fares for all NYSC members to avert future occurrence.

They also called on the government to provide organised transportation and liaise with reputable registered companies to convey NYSC members to their places of primary assignments.

Corpses of the five members who died in the accident arrived at the Victor Attah International Airport in a C–30 Nigeria Air Force jet marked NAF 917, on Wednesday, and were received by their family members amidst tears and grief.

They included Innocent Upere and Victor Akpan, both graduates of Mass Communication, Akwa Ibom State Polytechnic; Miracle Asuquo, graduate of Psychology; Stella Ekikoh, graduate of Sociology and Anthropology and Coleman Ezuruike, graduate of History and International Studies, the three were graduates of the University of Uyo.

Speaking to our correspondent in Uyo Thursday, on phone, a member of one of the bereaved families, Nsikak Akpan, called on the state government to take care of her other siblings at home.

“It’s not the best moment for me and my family. Imagine my brother never travelled by air before when he was alive but his corpse was brought back home in an aircraft l. I wish the state government can take care of my other siblings,” she said.

Also speaking Revd Isaiah Ekanem, an uncle to one of the deceased persons who identified the challenges of the NYSC to include road accidents, asked the federal government to post corps members within their geographical zones to avert such occurrences.

He said, “FG should subsidise flight fares for corps members deployed to long distances for their places of primary assignment to avert future incidents.”
