The Anambra State House of Assembly has signalled its intention to reconsider the suspension of the member representing Ayamelum State Constituency, Bernard Udemezue.
During plenary, the Speaker of the House, Somtochukwu Udeze, directed the Committee on Rules, Ethics and Privileges to review the matter. The committee, chaired by the Majority Leader, Ikenna Ofodeme, has been tasked with urgently reassessing the suspension in line with the House’s earlier resolution and presenting its findings at the next sitting.
Udeze explained that any decision to lift the suspension would depend on the committee’s evaluation of the lawmaker’s level of compliance with the disciplinary measures previously imposed.
Udemezue was suspended in August 2025 over allegations that he disclosed internal information about the House on social media, including details relating to lawmakers’ allowances and emoluments.
While defending his actions, the legislator maintained that he was fulfilling a campaign promise to operate an open-door policy and keep his constituents informed, including being transparent about his earnings.
Although he initially served a six-month suspension, his attempt to resume duties after the period elapsed reportedly did not follow stipulated procedures, including tendering an apology to the House. Consequently, he was handed an additional three-month suspension.
He is expected to complete the current suspension on February 26, 2026, pending the outcome of the committee’s review.
