Aisha Buhari Says She Will Not Remarry After Late Husband’s Death

Abuja, Nigeria — December 16, 2025

Former First Lady Aisha Buhari has stated that she does not intend to remarry following the death of her husband, the late former President Muhammadu Buhari. Her decision, she says, is driven by practicality and personal choice rather than moral or cultural expectations.

Speaking through author Dr. Charles Omole in his newly unveiled 600-page biography of her late husband titled From Soldier to Statesman: The Legacy of Muhammadu Buhari, Mrs. Buhari was quoted as saying: “She will not remarry, she says, almost with a shrug… it is not a moral pronouncement so much as a pragmatic one: she has grandchildren; one husband was enough.”

The book, launched at the State House in Abuja on Monday, presents her decision as a personal choice reflecting her current stage in life. It also places her position against traditional cultural narratives that often judge widows for either remarrying or remaining single.

According to the biography, Mrs. Buhari plans to focus on family life, her grandchildren, philanthropy, travel, and continued involvement in her foundation and medical centre activities. She expressed a desire for a quieter public life while maintaining meaningful engagement in areas of personal interest.

Aisha Buhari, born in 1971 in Adamawa State, married Muhammadu Buhari on December 2, 1989. They were together for 35 years and had five children. Former President Buhari passed away in July 2025 after a period of illness in London.
