Airtel Nigeria has temporarily halted its airtime and data credit services, which previously allowed eligible prepaid subscribers to borrow and repay on their next recharge.
In a statement released on Friday, the company clarified that customers can still purchase airtime and data seamlessly through its usual channels, assuring that the suspension will not disrupt overall service delivery nationwide.
Speaking on the decision, the Director of Marketing, Ismail Adeshina, described the move as necessary to align with evolving regulatory requirements. He emphasized the company’s commitment to maintaining compliance, transparency, and consumer protection while continuing to innovate within Nigeria’s digital space.
Airtel also noted that updates regarding the resumption of the service will be communicated in due course.
The development follows similar actions by other telecom operators, linked to new regulations introduced by the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC). The rules, outlined in the Digital, Electronic, Online or Non-Traditional Consumer Lending Regulations, 2025, establish stricter compliance and licensing standards for providers of digital credit services.
