Agemo Festival: Women Advised to Stay Indoors from 1pm in Ijebu-Ode

Women in the Ijebu-Ode axis of Ogun State have been advised to restrict their movement from 1:00 p.m. during the annual Agemo Festival, scheduled to hold from Tuesday, July 1 to Wednesday, July 2, 2025.

The Agemo Festival, a revered cultural event among the Ijebu people, involves the appearance of the sacred Agemo masquerades, which women are traditionally forbidden to see.

According to UGAMA TV, the festival is celebrated with rituals, processions, music, and dances to honor the spirit deity Agemo — believed to protect children and secure the future of the Ijebu people.

Designated traditional routes for the masquerades’ procession include:

Epe/Ijebu-Ode

Isiwo/Ijebu-Ode

Ijebu-Imusin/Ijebu-Ode

Ago-Iwoye/Oru/Ijebu-Ode

Okun-Owa/Agoro/Imodi-Imosan

Odogbolu/Ijebu-Ode

In a statement issued by the Deputy Registrar of Olabisi Onabanjo University, Kunle Olayeni, the university urged members of its campus community to remain vigilant and comply with traditional restrictions.

“This is to inform members of the University Community that the Annual Agemo Festival in Ijebuland will commence traditional rites from Tuesday, 1st July to Wednesday, 2nd July, 2025, with a procession through designated routes in some towns in the Ijebu axis of Ogun State,” the statement read.

“In view of the above, all female members of the University Community, especially Staff and Students, are strongly advised to comply with this directive.”

The university emphasized caution for all women, particularly staff and students, during the festival period.
