Nigeria’s Super Eagles have secured a place in the semi-finals of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations following an impressive 2–0 win against Algeria at the Stade de Marrakech.
The result sets up a highly anticipated last-four encounter with hosts Morocco, who edged Cameroon in their quarter-final clash.
Nigeria came into the match in strong form after a dominant 4–0 victory over Mozambique in the Round of 16. With 12 goals scored in four matches, the Super Eagles boast the tournament’s highest goal tally so far. Algeria, on the other hand, were unbeaten before the quarter-final and had conceded just once in the competition, underlining their defensive strength.
From kickoff, Nigeria asserted control, dominating possession and applying intense pressure high up the pitch. Victor Osimhen spearheaded the attack with pace and physicality, supported by Ademola Lookman and Akor Adams, while Alex Iwobi dictated play from midfield.
The Super Eagles created several opportunities in the first half, with Akor Adams missing a clear one-on-one chance and another effort being cleared off the line. Algeria stayed compact defensively and looked to break on the counter, with goalkeeper Luca Zidane making key saves to keep his side in contention.
Nigeria’s persistence paid off in the second half when Osimhen rose highest to power home a header and give the Eagles a deserved lead. The pressure continued, and Akor Adams doubled the advantage after being set up by Osimhen, effectively putting the contest beyond Algeria’s reach.
Wilfred Ndidi was influential in midfield, breaking up opposition attacks, while Nigeria’s full-backs and wingers stretched the Algerian defence, creating space for the forwards. Despite substitutions by Algeria in search of a comeback, Nigeria remained composed at the back and saw out the match comfortably.
The Super Eagles will now turn their attention to the semi-finals, where they face Morocco in what promises to be a thrilling encounter.
