The Senator representing the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Ireti Kingibe, has expressed concern over the poor voter turnout recorded during Saturday’s Area Council elections in Abuja.

Speaking to journalists after casting her vote in Maitama, the lawmaker lamented what she described as voter apathy among residents, describing the situation as disappointing.

According to her, the low participation was troubling, especially given the importance of local government administration and the public funds allocated to council chairmen to execute development projects and provide services at the grassroots.

“There is extreme voter apathy. Nobody is turning out to vote. It is a great shame. I am extremely disappointed. I expected them to take this seriously, especially considering that substantial revenue and funds are usually allocated to local government chairmen to carry out their responsibilities,” she said.

Kingibe stressed that the election provided residents with an opportunity to choose their local leaders and influence governance at the community level.

She noted that active civic engagement could help address recurring complaints about harassment and misconduct by local government officials.

She explained that while instances of voter intimidation were reported in some areas, they were absent in others, adding that citizens must go beyond complaining and actively exercise their democratic rights.

“The will of the people ultimately determines who emerges. If the people support the ruling party, it will win; if they prefer another party, the outcome will reflect that choice,” she said.

Despite the low turnout, the senator commended the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, for its conduct of the exercise in her area, noting that the commission should not be held responsible for voter apathy, even amid earlier reports of delays in the delivery of election materials.
