Family of Nze bids farewell to their mother, Late Maria Nze

The body of late Mrs Maria Uzouba Nze (Nee Ejimofor), has been interred in her hometown Ezere in Awgu Local government Area of Enugu state on Tuesday, April 9th 2024.

Eulogies flowed from family, relatives, friends and dignitaries who graced the event in Awgu, as each recounted their fondest memories of the deceased.

The late Maria Nze who earned the title Nenneora Obodo due to her generous and accommodating spirit, was a mother of seven, grandmother and great grandmother of several.

In his funeral Mass address, the officiating priest, His Lordship, Rev. Dr. IfeanyiChukwu John Okoye, the Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Awgu, praised the faith of the deceased, while urging the congregation to emulate her strong belief in the Christian doctrine.

He encouraged Christians in attendance to hold tightly to their belief in the resurrection of Christ as the foundation for ascension into heaven after one’s death.

In his tribute to the deceased, her first son Martin Kenechukwu Nze, reflected that no one is ever totally prepared for the death of a loved one, and described the loss as “irreparable”.

Eulogising the late Maria, the second son, Maj. Gen. Edward Nze, called her a mother in a million. He praised her strenght and disciplinary ways, which enabled him to thrive in the military and rise to the rank of a Major General.

According to the last son of the deceased, former Chairman of Awgu LGA, Hon. Nnanna Nze, the late Maria would be particularly remembered for her accommodating spirit and resilience.

Hon. Nnanna recounted fond memories of following his late mother to the farm and being sent back only to cry and follow her trail again.

Another son of the deceased, Cosmas Nze, hailed his late mother’s kind heartedness and devotion to the Christian faith.

Speaking to Ugama tv at the funeral ceremony, Secretary General, Ọhaneze Ndigbo, Dr. Alex Ogbonna, said that the late Maria had lived an enviable life, and had raised her children in godly ways which manifests in their positive contribution to the society.

Until her death, Late Maria Nze was a devout Christian and catholic.


She died at the age of 94.

The event was graced by political and military personalities.
