The Global Ugwueme women initiative, (GUWI), has hailed the Former Deputy president of the Senate, Sen. Ike Ekweremadu, over his efforts towards the development of their community.

The group which emanates from Ugwueme town in Awgu local government area of Enugu state is lead by Dr. Barr. Obiageli Offor.

UGAMATV correspondents learnt this during a courtesy visit from the women group to the Enugu Residence of the Senator.

Dr. Offor, during her speech, lauded Ekweremadu, for bringing ease to their lives at Ugwueme.Though the government had attracted several developmental projects such as Boreholes to their community, lack of maintenance and mismanagement took them back to their starting point.

Recalling the horrendous state of Ugwueme roads, She stated that for one to access the town, they had to ply the route from Isuochi in Abia state, also owing to the exorbitance of transport fares, travelling became an uphill task to Ugwueme indigenes and dwellers.

The sick and the pregnant women could not have an easy access to hospitals and maternities, the death toll due to crappy roads were on the rise. Ugwueme was void of any innovations, economic activities were declining by the day. In totality, the standard of living in Ugwueme continually deteriorating.

Given their ebbing living standard, and in a bid to stop it from receding further, the women gathered themselves, in 2017 and started taking deliberate efforts to create motorable paths for themselves.

They ventured into hiring of the service of road construction machines to create the road, they funded this through the petty contributions done within themselves, also from other well meaning indigenes of Ugwueme.

However, in 2019, she said, a major intervention came through Ekweremadu’s massive Community rehabilitation project.

With the completion of the Ugwueme road, came a significant boost in their economy, health facilities became easily accessible by the sick and pregnant women. Events began to take place right on schedule.

Moreso, they requested that other amenities such as Water, Electricity, be brought to them, stating that with the necessary measures such as employment of security and maintenance team, which was already in place, these amenities will be adequately secured and maintained to ensure its longevity in Ugwueme.

Also present during this visit was, Former Chairman of Awgu local government area, Hon. Nnanna Mathias Nze, who also applauded the senator for bringing motorable and commuter friendly roads in the Anike parts of Awgu, including Ugwueme and Ezere.

Initially, this particular group had paid a courtesy visit to the residence of the Deputy Minority leader, house of representatives and member representing Awgu, Aninri and Oji river federal Constituency in the house of representatives, Rt. Hon Toby Okechukwu, for similar purpose. This is to affirm that they are quite grateful for the developmental feats achieved in their community.

Ekweremadu in his speech, commended the leadership of the group, for Uniting the women for such a noble cause as influencing development in their community.

He also explained that he is undertaking this massive community development projects, to support the government and to bring the rightful entitlements of the people to their doorstep.

“It is discouraging, to see those amenities being laid to waste or out of use due to mishandling and lack of maintenance by the beneficiaries”, he said.

Hence, he enjoined them to mobilize a maintenance crew, to oversee the amenities already secured in their community, since repetition of projects in a community is not easily fetched.

Assuredly, he promised them to prioritize their requests in the next budget, because he has seen their dedication towards influencing growth in their environment.
