SIGNIFICANCE OF THE RED CAP IN THE IGBO LAND

In Igbo Land the red cap symbolizes authority, tradition and culture. It is mostly worn by chiefs in the Igbo land and it also represents institution of leadership and power in the Igbo culture.

Red cap in the Igbo land is not usually worn by just anybody. There are a certain class of people which are the elderly men, chiefs . An Eagle’s feather is usually attached to the cap which signifies prominence.

Once a man is expected to start making appearances with his red cap once he receives a chieftaincy title. People that wear Red caps are seen as people who has fulfilled certain obligations in the community.

In the Igbo land Red cap men are known as Ozo’s, Ichie , nze’s and many other names. These men area expected to abide to every rule in the community. These men are not expected to cheat, lie or misrepresent .

But lately practically anyone wears it these days without fulfilling the rights in the community.
