Senator Neda Imasuen, representing Edo South Senatorial District, has announced plans to defect from the Labour Party (LP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) on June 12, citing internal disarray within the LP as his primary reason.
Imasuen, the sole Labour Party senator from Edo State, disclosed the decision during a media briefing in Benin City, describing it as a strategic move to align Edo South with the Federal Government’s Renewed Hope Agenda under President Bola Tinubu.
The senator, who chairs the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges and Public Petitions, said the defection coincides with the celebration of his second year in office.
“This is not about opportunism. It is a deliberate alignment to better serve my constituents through meaningful collaboration with the Federal Government,” he stated.
Highlighting his achievements, Senator Imasuen pointed to the sponsorship of the Federal College of Education, Abudu (Establishment) Bill, the resolution of over 20 national public petitions, and numerous vocational and agricultural empowerment programmes in Edo South.
He noted that targeted efforts have supported rubber, cocoa, and cashew farmers, significantly improving yields. He also mentioned scholarships for students, training of traditional birth attendants, and various youth empowerment projects.
Despite these strides, he acknowledged challenges in sustaining development efforts due to limited local government collaboration and called for stronger synergy at the grassroots.
“We’ve trained farmers in modern techniques and equipped them with tools for enhanced productivity. The feedback from communities has been overwhelmingly positive,” Imasuen said.
As he prepares to officially join the APC, Senator Imasuen reaffirmed his commitment to championing healthcare, rural development, and the overall welfare of Edo South residents, while pledging full support for President Tinubu’s national development goals.
