The Rivers State chapter of the South-South Physically Challenged Indigenes has cautioned that the state of emergency recently declared by President Bola Tinubu should not exceed the constitutionally permitted six-month period.
Speaking at a press briefing on Friday in Port Harcourt, the group’s Chairman, Altraide Itekena, said the ongoing political crisis in Rivers State has marginalized Persons Living With Disabilities (PWDs) and disrupted governance.
Itekena announced plans to establish a five-member reconciliation committee to mediate between suspended Governor Siminalayi Fubara, his predecessor and current FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, and other key stakeholders in the crisis.
“We acknowledge President Tinubu’s declaration, but it must not go beyond six months,” Itekena stated. “Our committee will engage all parties, including the newly appointed Sole Administrator, Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas (retd), and advocate for the inclusion of PWDs in all processes.”
He urged Ibas to remain neutral and ensure that PWDs are recognized in the emergency administration.
The group also pledged full support for peace efforts and demanded representation in decision-making, warning that PWDs must no longer be sidelined in the affairs of the state.
