The political climate in Enugu State is undergoing a significant transformation, marked by increasing competitiveness, heightened civic engagement, and the emergence of new power players ahead of the 2027 general elections.
In a departure from the long-standing tradition of limited opposition that defined the state’s political landscape since the advent of the Fourth Republic in 1999, the current environment reflects a maturing democratic culture. Political actors across party lines are now subject to growing scrutiny, with constructive criticism and performance-based evaluation becoming more pronounced.
Even the administration of Governor Peter Mbah, widely acknowledged for its developmental strides within its first three years, is not insulated from mounting political pressure. This evolving dynamic underscores a new era of accountability and active opposition in the state.
Recent political realignments, including the reported movement of key stakeholders across party lines, have further intensified the race. While the ruling structure continues to consolidate its influence, opposition parties such as the African Democratic Congress (ADC) are positioning themselves as formidable contenders, signaling a potentially competitive electoral contest in 2027.
Amid this shifting terrain, one name gaining increasing prominence is Ezenwa Onyirimba. The medical doctor-turned-politician is steadily redefining grassroots political engagement in the Aninri/Awgu/Oji River Federal Constituency, popularly referred to as Greater Awgu.
Though he has yet to occupy an elective office, Onyirimba’s political footprint is expanding through strategic interventions and grassroots-driven development initiatives. Currently serving as Special Adviser on Youth and Student Affairs within the APC structure, he has leveraged his position to initiate projects that directly impact local communities.
Among his notable contributions is the facilitation of an ongoing federal medical facility project in Ihe-Achi, aimed at addressing the longstanding healthcare infrastructure deficit in the region. In addition, he has spearheaded the rehabilitation of 18 boreholes across multiple communities, improving access to potable water.
Demonstrating a strong commitment to youth empowerment, Onyirimba also attracted a technology training programme for over 300 unemployed graduates from Greater Awgu at the Digital Bridge Institute in Ibagwa Nike. The initiative is designed to transition participants into employment upon completion, positioning them for relevance in Nigeria’s growing digital economy.
In the agricultural sector, his intervention has extended to providing incentives to over 60 farmers across the three local government areas, supporting local food production and rural livelihoods.
Politically, Onyirimba is a founding member of the APC in Oji River Local Government Area and has played a pivotal role in sustaining party activities prior to the influx of defectors from other parties. His influence is further amplified through the establishment of the IFEDICHE Political Family, a grassroots political movement spanning all 41 wards in Greater Awgu.
The group has already demonstrated its mobilization strength, notably through a 10,000-strong youth solidarity march held in Oji River on April 11, 2026, and its active participation in the Enugu West mega rally in support of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Governor Mbah’s re-election bid.
With eyes firmly set on securing the APC ticket for the Aninri/Awgu/Oji River Federal Constituency in 2027, Onyirimba has expressed confidence in the party’s growing structure and acceptance across Greater Awgu.
As political activities gather momentum, observers note that his blend of grassroots engagement, developmental focus, and strategic mobilization may position him as a key contender in what is shaping up to be one of the most competitive electoral cycles in Enugu State’s recent history.
