In response to a wave of deadly attacks reportedly carried out by herdsmen in Ondo State, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to declare a state of emergency to address the worsening security crisis.
The call was made in a statement released on Tuesday by Leye Igbabo, the PDP’s Director of Media and Publicity in Ondo State, who described the ongoing violence as “mindless killings” and accused Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa of failing in his role as the state’s Chief Security Officer.
The PDP expressed deep concern over what it described as the governor’s passive response to the recurring violence, alleging that he has turned a blind eye to the activities of violent herders.
“The killings have become far too frequent and signal a troubling state of helplessness and government compromise,” Igbabo stated. “It is unacceptable that these criminals continue to operate unchallenged in a state where a functional government supposedly exists.”
The opposition party called on President Tinubu to intervene directly, citing the inability of the state government to stem the violence.
“We urge Mr. President to take urgent steps by considering the declaration of a state of emergency on security in Ondo State if this administration remains unable or unwilling to confront this crisis,” the statement read.
The PDP also warned that continued inaction could plunge not only Ondo but the entire Southwest into a humanitarian and security disaster.
