A prominent socio-political organisation, New Enugu Group, has thrown its full support behind Governor Peter Mbah’s decision to join the All Progressives Congress (APC), describing the move as a bold, visionary, and strategic step towards integrating Enugu State into the national development framework.
Speaking with journalists on Tuesday at the Michael Okpara Square, Enugu, during the official defection ceremony where President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and members of the APC National Working Committee (NWC) formally received Governor Mbah into the ruling party, the convener of the group, Barr. Henry Okeke, hailed the governor for what he termed “a courageous act of leadership anchored on foresight and patriotism.”
According to Okeke, Mbah’s decision marks “a decisive break from the past” and ushers in “a new political dawn for Enugu State.” He said the governor’s realignment with the party at the centre would open the doors for increased federal attention, infrastructure development, and investment opportunities long denied the state.
“We are declaring full support for our capacity governor and an icon of the New Enugu State as he takes this bold, wise, and historic step to connect our dear state to the Progressives Government at the centre,” Okeke said. “We align fully with His Excellency in this new dawn.”
Okeke added that the New Enugu Group, with structures spread across all 260 electoral wards in the state, has already mobilized to back Governor Mbah and sustain grassroots support for his administration’s vision of transformative governance.
“Our members remain steadfast and united in our confidence in the governor’s leadership,” he said. “His achievements in just two years have been unprecedented, and we are confident that this political alignment will translate into more jobs, greater opportunities, and accelerated development for our people.”
The group’s endorsement, he noted, reflects a growing sentiment among citizens who believe that Enugu’s partnership with the federal government will boost the state’s economic relevance and strengthen its access to national projects and initiatives.
Governor Mbah, earlier in the day, had formally declared Enugu’s transition from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the APC, citing overwhelming calls from citizens for the state to “connect to the national grid of governance” and unlock broader channels of growth and collaboration.
The colourful event drew an impressive crowd of supporters, including APC national leaders, governors, and several former PDP stalwarts. Speakers at the rally described the development as a watershed moment in the political history of Enugu State — one that could redefine the region’s role in national politics and development planning.
