The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has released new guidelines for the technical audit of Nigeria’s electricity transmission system and network data validation.

In a notice published on its official X account on Monday, the commission said the guidelines were issued in line with Sections 34 and 226 of the Electricity Act 2023 and Section 7.2.2 of the Grid Code.

According to NERC, the guidelines, which take effect from July 20, 2026, are designed to establish a transparent framework for periodic technical audits of the national transmission network and validate transmission data to improve the reliability, safety, security and operational efficiency of the power grid.

The commission said the guidelines apply to the Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) and all licensed Transmission Service Providers (TSPs) operating within the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry (NESI).

Under the new framework, NISO is required to carry out a comprehensive technical assessment of the 330kV and 132kV transmission network at least once every five years through qualified consultants.

NERC also directed Transmission Service Providers to grant auditors full access to transmission facilities, operational records and other relevant information needed for the exercise.

In addition, TSPs must develop and implement Performance Improvement Plans based on audit findings and submit annual progress reports to the commission.

The regulator urged all stakeholders to study the new guidelines and ensure full compliance with their provisions.
