MTN Rewards AMVCA Best Short Film Winners with ₦5m, Expands Support for Emerging Filmmakers

MTN Nigeria has presented a ₦5 million cash prize to the creators of Hussaini, the winning film in the Best Short Film category at the 12th Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA), reaffirming its commitment to supporting young creatives and the growth of Nigeria’s film industry.

The award-winning film, produced by filmmakers Orire Nwani and Josh Olaoluwa, emerged as the top entry in one of the AMVCA’s most competitive categories, which recognises exceptional storytelling and emerging filmmaking talent.

Speaking during the prize presentation, MTN Nigeria’s Chief Marketing Officer, Onyinye Ikenna-Emeka, said the company remains committed to empowering young Nigerians and creating opportunities for them to showcase their talents.

She noted that youth empowerment remains a core focus for the telecommunications company, stressing that young people are critical to Nigeria’s future and development.

“At MTN, one of the things we are deeply committed to is youth empowerment. We believe that the youth of Nigeria are the future of the country, and we will continue to support platforms that help them express their creativity and realise their potential,” she said.

The creators of Hussaini described the recognition as a significant milestone in their filmmaking journey, particularly after receiving multiple nominations in previous editions of the awards.

Beyond sponsoring the Best Short Film category, MTN also extended its support for emerging talents through activities held during AMVCA week, including Young Filmmakers Day and the #MTNFilmChallenge initiative.

Through the challenge, five aspiring filmmakers — Precious Aisa, Fitz-Williams Ochie, Ugwueze Jennifer, Anuyimika Ayomide, and Alexander Oshiame — received a combined ₦4.65 million in cash prizes for producing outstanding short-form films that highlighted Nigerian culture, creativity and everyday experiences.

Two additional finalists were also recognised with consolation prizes.

The Young Filmmakers Day event, held at MultiChoice Studios in Lagos, brought together aspiring creatives and industry professionals for mentorship, networking and knowledge-sharing sessions.

Participants had the opportunity to engage with renowned filmmakers and actors, including Uche Jombo, Orire Nwani, Tamara Adeyemi and Stan Eze, who shared insights on storytelling, filmmaking techniques and career development within the entertainment industry.

The initiative forms part of MTN’s broader efforts to nurture emerging talent, promote creativity and contribute to the continued growth of Nigeria’s vibrant film sector.
