Lagos Ranked 14th Best Nightlife City in the World, 2nd in Africa by Time Out Magazine

Lagos has once again secured global recognition for its vibrant social scene, ranking 14th on Time Out Magazine’s 2025 list of the world’s best nightlife cities, and placing second in Africa, just behind Cape Town, South Africa.

The ranking, released by the internationally acclaimed lifestyle publication, was based on surveys of thousands of city residents and insights from nightlife experts across the globe. According to the report, 79% of Lagosians rated their city’s nightlife positively, applauding its diversity, energy, and evolution—from upscale lounges to inclusive underground raves.

Lagos outranked major African cities like Cairo (15th) and Marrakech (19th), reinforcing its status as a continental cultural and entertainment powerhouse.

Reacting to the announcement, Lagos State Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Gbenga Omotoso, said the recognition reflects the success of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s efforts to enhance tourism and security infrastructure.

“It shows that the security architecture put in place by Governor Sanwo-Olu is working. It speaks to the number of tourists who pour into Lagos daily and the success of the last Detty December,” Omotoso said.

He added that the state is working on institutionalising its tourism calendar, especially around end-of-year festivities, and revealed that Lagos will host the prestigious EI (water race) Championship later in 2025, becoming the first African city to do so.

Time Out noted that nightlife globally is transforming to reflect evolving urban preferences—a shift Lagos has embraced with remarkable vibrancy and creativity.

This new accolade follows Lagos’ 6th-place ranking in Time Out’s 2024 list, where it outshined cities like Rotterdam and Manchester.

Time Out Magazine, founded in 1968, is a trusted global guide to urban culture, operating in over 330 cities across 59 countries.
