Jadon Sancho’s message after scoring: Justice for George Floyd

Jadon Sancho gave Borussia Dortmund a 2-0 lead away to Paderborn in what was his first start since the Bundesliga got back underway, but the Englishman opted to use his celebration to bring further light on the incidents surrounding George Floyd’s death.

Floyd, an African-American, was killed by a white police officer, Derek Chauvin, in Minneapolis after the officer kept his knee on Floyd’s neck for eight minutes and 46 seconds.

“Justice for George Floyd,” read the message on Sancho’s shirt as he lifted it up after scoring his first goal of the game.

Sancho is not the first Bundesliga player to have paid tribute to Floyd this weekend, as Schalke’s American midfielder Weston McKennie and Borussia Monchengladbach forward Marcus Thuram did so previously.

McKennie had a message on his armband reading “Justice for George”, while Thuram took a knee in a manner reminiscent of former NFL star Colin Kaepernick, who has become a symbol of this struggle.
