The House of Representatives erupted into disorder on Wednesday after a motion by Public Accounts Committee (PAC) chairman Bamidele Salam accused Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) of failing to remit roughly ₦5.2 trillion in operating surplus and more than ₦11 trillion in revenues collected via the Remita platform — totaling about ₦16 trillion.
Debate broke out over which committee should lead the investigation: some lawmakers called for a special ad-hoc committee, while others insisted that PAC alone should pursue the probe. The disagreement degenerated into shouting and disorder before order was restored.
Ultimately, the House passed a motion summoning CBN Governor Olayemi Cardoso to appear before PAC on Tuesday, 16 December 2025, to explain the alleged shortfalls and present a plan for immediate remittance of the funds.
The PAC chair emphasised that CBN had ignored repeated invitations to clarify the discrepancies — a refusal seen as unacceptable given the size of the alleged withheld funds and the country’s revenue needs.
