An elderly woman has been confirmed dead after being hit by a white Pathfinder Jeep along Almaroof, inward Pleasure, Oke-Odo area of Lagos State, over the weekend.

The ill-fated vehicle, bearing registration number JJJ 118 HX, reportedly lost control and veered off the road, striking the victim who was walking by the roadside.

It was gathered that the woman died instantly from the impact.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the driver, suspected to have been intoxicated, was speeding when the vehicle’s brakes failed.

In the ensuing panic, he swerved off the road and fatally hit the pedestrian.

Operatives of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, LASTMA, arrived swiftly at the scene and apprehended the driver as he attempted to flee.

The officials secured the area to prevent secondary accidents and restored normal traffic flow.

According to Adebayo Taofiq, Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment at LASTMA, officers from the Ile-Epo Police Division were immediately contacted for reinforcement.

The police have since taken over the investigation, while the damaged vehicle was towed and handed over for further examination.

Using the victim’s mobile phone, LASTMA officers were able to trace and notify her family about the tragic incident.

Reacting to the development, LASTMA General Manager, Mr Olalekan Bakare-Oki, condemned the growing incidence of fatal crashes linked to drunk driving and poorly maintained vehicles across the state.

He warned that such acts of recklessness would no longer be tolerated, stressing that offenders would face the full wrath of the law.

“The sanctity of human life is inviolable. The continued loss of innocent lives due to recklessness and moral irresponsibility is unacceptable. Every motorist must embrace discipline, sobriety, and respect for human life while using our roads,” Bakare-Oki said.

The LASTMA boss also called on law enforcement agencies to ensure a thorough investigation and the prosecution of the suspect under the state’s traffic and criminal laws.

He reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to safeguarding road users through strict enforcement, public awareness campaigns, and sustained collaboration with other security agencies.
