The Enugu State Government has condemned in strong terms the brutal murder of Rev. Fr. Mathew Eya of Nsukka Catholic Diocese, describing the act as cowardly and cold-blooded.
Rev. Fr. Eya was shot dead by unknown gunmen on Friday, September 19, 2025, along Alumona–Eha Ndiagu road in Nsukka Local Government Area.
In a statement signed by the Commissioner for Information and Communication, Dr. Malachy Agbo, the government expressed deep sorrow over the tragic incident and commiserated with the priest’s immediate family, the Catholic Diocese of Nsukka, and the Catholic faithful across the state.
“The government of Enugu State condemns in its entirety this gruesome act, which is nothing short of wickedness and cowardice. We mourn with the bereaved family and the entire Catholic Church,” the statement read.
Reiterating its commitment to the security of lives and property, the state government vowed that the killers would not go unpunished. It pledged to deploy every available resource, including advanced technology and credible intelligence, to track down the perpetrators and eliminate remnants of criminal elements in the state.
As part of measures to fast-track investigations, the government announced a ₦10 million bounty for anyone with useful information that could lead to the arrest of the assailants.

The government assured residents of Enugu that it remains resolute in its determination to safeguard peace and security across the state.
