Edo State Under Siege as Armed Robbers Kill Police Officer

A police sergeant identified as Aminu Yusuf, an orderly to a Chinese expatriate, has reportedly been killed by gunmen suspected to be armed robbers.

UGAMATV gathered that the deceased was killed on July 16, 2025 at about 2:45 pm on First East Circular Road, Benin City.

It was learnt that the incident occurred shortly after the Chinese expatriate had completed a cash withdrawal from a bank in the state capital.

The late police officer was said to have been attached to a company as part of an authorised police assignment.

A source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the gunmen, who were four in number, also made away with the deceased’s AK-47 rifle (with breech number BD 347851), 30 rounds of ammunition, and an undisclosed amount of money.

The source added that the deceased and the expatriate’s vehicle were attacked by the gunmen while returning from the bank with a huge sum of money running into millions.

He said the police sergeant was rushed to a specialist hospital in Benin City but was declared dead on arrival.

He said his remains have been deposited in a mortuary.

According to him, the victim had been tasked with escorting the expatriate during a routine cash movement from a branch of one of the commercial banks located on Sapele Road, Benin City.

At press time, the Public Relations Officer of the Edo State Police Command, Moses Yamu, was yet to confirm the report.

However, sources in the command said that the police authorities have launched a manhunt for the attackers and are working to recover both the missing weapon and the stolen funds.
