Buhari approves Nigeria’s withdrawal from international basketball games for two years 

President Muhammadu Buhari has approved the immediate withdrawal of Nigeria from all international basketball competitions for the next two years.

Minister of youth and sports development, Sunday Dare who disclosed this on Thursday May 12. Dare said the decision was taken as part of federal government’s plan to revamp the sport from the grassroots.

He said; 

“Government intends to utilise this period of break to address contentious issues among stakeholders. 

“The Terms of Reference (TOR) and membership of the Interim Management Committee will be announced in due course.”

Ismaila Abubakar, permanent secretary of the ministry, who read the minister’s statement at a media briefing, said the issuance of the presidential order became imperative to show government’s interest and commitment to the development of basketball in the country.

The Interim Management Committee (IMC) will supervise the management and development of the leagues.

This is however coming amid a crisis within the Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF).
