Former Vice President and PDP presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, alongside ex-Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai and former Sokoto State Governor Aminu Tambuwal, visited former President Muhammadu Buhari at his Kaduna residence on Friday.
The meeting was revealed via a post on X (formerly Twitter) by Imran Wakili, a close ally of El-Rufai.
“Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, together with Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, Aminu Tambuwal, and other dignitaries, visited former President Muhammadu Buhari at his Kaduna residence,” Wakili wrote. He added that El-Rufai’s respect for Buhari remains unwavering.
Their visit comes as Atiku, El-Rufai, and other opposition leaders intensify efforts to form a united front ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Recently, Atiku announced a coalition during a press briefing organized by Concerned Leaders and Political Stakeholders in Nigeria, aimed at unseating President Bola Tinubu. The alliance reportedly includes Labour Party’s Peter Obi, El-Rufai, Tambuwal, and other political heavyweights.
Amid ongoing discussions, former Social Democratic Party (SDP) presidential candidate, Adewale Adebayo, revealed that Atiku and Obi are in talks to join the SDP. He said that if they align with the party’s values, they could present a formidable challenge to Tinubu and the ruling APC in 2027.
Meanwhile, NNPP chieftain Buba Galadima claimed El-Rufai could serve as Atiku’s backup candidate in the SDP should the PDP deny Atiku its presidential ticket.
