PORT HARCOURT – The Nigerian Army has issued a strong warning to the public following the shocking discovery of an unexploded military-grade ordnance during a burial in Oromeruzimagu community, Port Harcourt Local Government Area of Rivers State.

According to a statement released on Monday by Lieutenant Colonel Danjuma Jonah Danjuma, Acting Deputy Director, Army Public Relations for 6 Division, the device was uncovered while locals were digging a grave in a residential compound.

In a surprising move, the community reportedly removed the ordnance and kept it in an air-conditioned room to prevent detonation — a decision the Army has strongly condemned as dangerous and ill-advised.

“This cautionary notice becomes necessary in view of the devastating impact such high trajectory weapons could have on the environment,” Lt. Col. Danjuma warned, urging the public to report such discoveries to the nearest security agency rather than attempting to handle them.

The General Officer Commanding (GOC) 6 Division, Major General Emmanuel Eric Emekah, commended the community for their prompt report and reassured the people of the Niger Delta region that trained personnel are on standby to safely manage and evacuate such explosive items.

Residents are reminded that unexploded ordnance is not only highly unstable but could lead to catastrophic consequences if tampered with by untrained individuals.
